It's a balance between a reasonable price and meeting customer demands for safety, sophistication and upscale features. The new toyota corolla walks this tightrope well. one step up from the entry-level tercel, one rung down from the popular camry, the new corolla will only enhance toyota's reputation for meeting the needs of its customers. With an all-new body, engine and interior, the corolla blends existing virtues with new strengths into an appealing whole. as a model name, corolla has been around for some 30 years, evolving from a tiny imported sedan of slightly odd appearance into a made-in-america compact that sells well and is routinely praised for its refinement. naturally, there are numerous companies looking for a big slice of this market. Honda, nissan, volkswagen, dodge, chevrolet, ford and saturn all offer their own interpretations of what a compact car should be. And they all build good cars. walkaroundtoyota, which seldom opts for startling style, has once again brought forth a conservative, clean shape that doesn't call attention to itself. A couple of details set it apart from other designs. The body sides are indented and the rear lamp clusters look similar to those of the lexus gs with small trunk-mounted segments. But as a whole, the corolla does without superfluous ornamentation. the corolla comes in a choice of three trim levels. Ve is the plainest, a low-price car with all but the most basic amenities optional. Most people opt for the mid-range ce or the well-equipped le. None are exactly luxurious unless extras are ordered, but they fulfill transportation needs well. frankly, toyota's ve to ce to le strategy is a little bit difficult to fathom. Even a digital clock is extra on a ve, which gets the plainest interior fabrics; it's hard to imagine anyone but fleet customers will go for a ve without air conditioning and a radio. Add much equipment to one and its price begins to climb to that of the ce. a ce can be equipped to be a virtual twin to the le (except for the latter's optional sunroof and alloy wheels) while both antilock brakes and side-impact airbags are options for all three versions. but toyota has long been wedded to this approach. Its primary drawback, aside from confusion over which car gets what features, is an element of sticker shock. The ve's base price appears to put the corolla squarely in the bargain category, right down there in rock-bottom land with many competitors. Generous room is provided for the driver and front-seat passenger, both of whom sit on comfortable seats. The rear seat, as is common to cars in this class, is rather less commodious. With two occupants it is a reasonable habitat--lacking in both leg- and headroom for taller passengers--but three riders had best be good friends. Cupholders, storage boxes and a center-console with a lidded bin are provided for convenience. the interior design matches the exterior insofar as it's attractive and well-finished but little different than that of most cars in the class. Right on all counts. Light but precise power-assisted steering helps as well. Ride quality, given the short wheelbase, is very good. Nothing short of potholes will disturb the corolla's occupants. The rocking-horse motions sometimes caused by freeway expansion strips were too muted to notice on the corolla. The brakes stop the car quickly even after repeated hard use; they are, naturally, at their best when equipped with optional abs. the economy-grade tires were less than ideal, however. They make a noisy nuisance of themselves when asked to carry the car around corners at anything beyond a casual pace, they transmit tread noise into the cabin on the highway, and they lack grip under hard braking. Without first-hand knowledge, we'd expect the smaller tires on lesser corollas will be even less satisfactory. one final irritant will affect some drivers. On numerous occasions, i inadvertently applied the brakes while accelerating, and caught my foot under the brake pedal when attempting to slow down. Anyone who wears a size 12 or larger shoe will need to pay special attention to pedal usage. This is not a problem with corollas equipped with manual gearboxes as a different brake pedal is used. summarythe corolla redesign can be considered a near-total success. Despite the few minor problems noted above--awkward pedal placement may be seen as more than trivial, but won't affect the majority of drivers--it is a better car than the previous version, which was itself one of the better offerings in its class. The 1998 corolla is comfortable, rugged and well-built, a solid little machine that delivers what it promises. In the ride and handling department, it is better than expected. by shopping carefully, a customer can drive away in a nicely appointed corolla without spending much more than $14,000. We'd opt for a camry over a loaded corolla. but a moderately equipped corolla merits serious consideration. History has shown we want more for less, and the camry seems to offer exactly that to a large segment of the population. That's part of the reason it was america's best-selling car last year. fortunately, toyota hasn't just stripped the camry down to bare essentials and sent it out the door. Nor has it built a price leader that no one would buy. From the spacious passenger compartment to the storage space in the large trunk, the camry is built for an active life style. the camry ce, which is the base model and the one we tested, is every bit a camry. This summer toyota has stretched the dollar a bit farther by offering a $1,186 value package that includes air conditioning, cruise control, variable intermittent wipers, and power windows, door locks and mirrors. That represents a $1,000 savings over the retail price for that equipment. All this in addition to the $800 optional automatic transmission for less than $20,000. (prices include $420 destination charge.). walkaroundthe camry is offered in three trim levels, the ce, le and xle. Both the $20,218 le and the $23,178 xle models offer a wide range of standard features. It's powered by a double overhead-cam 3. 0-liter v6 that produces 194 horsepower and 209 foot-pounds of torque. A more elegant interior is also part of the xle attraction as well as a vehicle immobilizing anti-theft device, coupled with remote keyless entry. It takes a sharp eye to see the difference. The design isn't breaking new ground, but then again it isn't offensive. Front and rear doors open wide, making entry and exit easier than many other sedans. The rear 60/40 split seat folds forward, increasing the load hauling ability. interiortoyota's goal continues to be to build vehicles that offer comfort, convenience and a high degree of safety. This is precisely what the company has succeeded in doing. The rigid camry body structure has given the safety engineers a good basis to begin their handy work. dual front driver and passenger air bags are standard on all camrys, as are three-point seat belts for all passengers, even one in the center rear position. Front seat belt pretensioners cinch the belts tight upon sensing and impact and force-limiters reduce the belt's load on an occupant's torso helping reduce injury. Front side-impact airbags are available as an option on all camrys. The side-impact airbags are designed to help reduce the likelihood of injuries to the driver or front passenger in the event of a severe side collision. Anti-lock brakes are standard on le v6 and xle models. They are a $610 option on ce and le models. We'd prefer abs was standard. Daytime running lights come on all cars equipped with abs. like most toyotas, the controls, switches and gauges are designed to be easy to use and read. In this case, one area needs some attention. The controls for the sound system are a bit small and difficult to manipulate while driving. The flowing dash is no-nonsense, yet pleasing to the eye. The interior design and trim are also pleasing, although edging on the ordinary. the front bucket seats are supportive without being restrictive. The cloth upholstery feels built for extended use. In fact, the driver's seat was so comfortable throughout a number of long drives it made us question the expense of adding power adjustments and leather upholstery. driving impressionwe spent many full days behind the wheel of the camry. Traveling along the pacific coast from sunup to sundown can be tiring. However, at the end of each day it was extremely difficult for us to find fault with any aspect of the car. granted, the camry isn't a sports car, yet the front macpherson strut and the rear dual-link suspension handled the twisting coastal roads admirably. Standard gas charged shock absorbers and stabilizer bars both front and rear play a significant role in the camry's quality of ride and handling ability. It seems soft around town, but feels firmer in corners. Greatly assisting in this appreciation of the automatic is a little button on the gearshift lever. With a mere push of a button the driver can lock out overdrive. This keeps the transmission from shifting above third gear, providing much better acceleration performance. We also found it helpful on many occasions heading down city streets for a quick trip to the market. summarythe toyota camry shares its heritage with the lexus es300. Five models of the 2012 camry range from the stripped-down l to the sport-tuned se to the hybrid. new for 2012, the camry hasn't changed its size, as the wheelbase, length, track and height are within fractions of an inch of those of the sixth-generation 2011 model. But the sheetmetal is totally new, and a new roofline makes it slightly more slippery. The 2012 camry's lines are attractive, and it's clearly more contemporary than the 2011. What toyota calls aero-corner design enhances this image. Interior dimensions stay the same within fractions of those of the previous version. There's a bit more backseat legroom, and some interior parts have been thinned to create more eye, knee and elbow room. The instrument panel is pretty and functional, storage spaces well thought-out, and a 60/40 split rear seat is standard. A new leather dashboard is neat and stylish. for powertrains, the standard i4 and optional v6 engines are carryovers from 2010 and 2011, respectively. Six-speed automatic transmissions are standard. The standard 2. 5-liter i4 has double vvt-i technology, making 178 horsepower. The 3. 5-liter v6 produces 268 horsepower. It reflects ongoing research in impact energy management. the tuned suspension in the camry se might be too firm for some; we didn't find the se uncomfortable, but we did find the softer camry xle more relaxing around town. Windows outlined in chrome, but no more, except for a thin strip at the rocker level on the le and xle. Body-colored door handles on all models. the face of the camry se is tweaked, for the better, with body color over the black mesh grille, and more aggressive air intakes in the valance under the bumper. Headlamps are the same, angled, narrow and sleek, with a neat little notch in the line at the bottom. interiorinterior dimensions for the seventh-generation 2012 camry are within fractions of an inch of the sixth-generation (2007-11) models. There's a bit more backseat legroom, with 38. 9 inches on a flat rear floor decent for a midsize car. Some interior parts have been thinned to create more eye, knee and elbow room: a-pillars, control panels on the doors, front seatbacks, center console. interior materials are different depending on the model, with the camry l, le and xle using a nice standard fabric, and the camry se fabric with softex synthetic leather trim. Real leather is available on the camry xle i4 and standard on the xle v6, with leather-trimmed ultrasuede available on the se and xle hybrid. the fit of the front buckets is good on the camry le and xle, with more bolstering on the se. The camry hybrid has its own material, more like the se. The standard leather is overlapped in an arc with neat stitching, for a saddle-like effect; new passengers will compliment it and maybe run their hands over the seam. The little window for the clock up at the top looks like a hood scoop. we found the driver's position comfortable, with thoughtful padding for the driver's right leg against the center console, and high armrests. Decent door pocket, great cubby forward in the center console, big glovebox with light door. the instrument panel is all new for 2012. We wonder what the stripper camry l model without the 3d face looks like. Instruments are the same, only difference is in the rings around the gauges, chrome or satin. the hybrid's panel is the same only prettier. In toyota-speak it has optitron meters with white illumination, blue metallic printing, and white lighting pointer. Another plus: relocation of the battery packs increase the trunk space in the camry hybrid to 13. 1 cubic feet (from the previous 10. 6). trunk space on all camry models except the hybrid is a roomy 15. 4 cubic feet. the manually operated climate control has big dials and easy buttons on the camry le. The automatic climate control on camry xle uses a 6. 1-inch lcd touch-screen also used for radio tuning, and navigation. Safely and simply they say, and we say don't believe it. It can all be bundled with navigation and satellite radio and voice recognition, and controlled on the 7-inch touch screen. That's because the camry se is tighter than the camry xle or le; and the 178-hp i4 is quick, silent and smooth, no matter that the 268-hp v6 is faster. Both the i4 and v6 are carried over, the i4 new in 2010 and v6 new for 2011. on the camry xle, using the lighter 6-speed for the i4, we noted good ratios, smooth upshifts and invisible kickdowns around town. A more elegant interior with premium cloth upholstery is a big part of the xle attraction. Value package #2 adds leather seating surfaces and trim, a power driver's seat, side-impact air bags and a power moonroof to the xle for $1,604 or to the xle v6 for $1,104. Xle v6 comes with 16-inch wheels and tires in place of the 14- and 15-inch rubber on the other models. walkarounda new grille and bumper design and new multi-reflector headlamps brighten the appearance of the camry for 2000. Still, the le's cloth seats lack support. The cloth upholstery, even in the ce, feels built for extended use, however. for 2000, all three trim levels have improved audio systems with am/fm/cd/cassette standard. The rear 60/40 split seat folds forward, increasing the load hauling ability. The gooseneck hinges on the trunk lid, which intrude slightly into the cargo area, are less than ideal, however. driving impressionlong days spent in the toyota camry fail to reveal significant faults with any aspect of the car. The camry feels smooth, soft and comfortable around town. It isn't a sports car and floats a bit on its suspension, but it handles well and is easy to drive fast. The 2. 2-liter provides acceptable acceleration performance and, once up to speed, keeps the car rolling along nicely. It has to downshift more frequently, and passing on two-lane roads requires more planning than with the v6. It earns an estimated epa city/highway gas mileage rating of 23/32 mpg when equipped with the manual transmission, 23/30 mpg with the automatic. toyota's 194-horsepower 3. 0-liter engine is one of the best v6 engines in the industry. It provides good smooth power with good performance for passing and accelerating briskly from intersections. The ecti transmission mated to the v6 features an adaptive program that responds to individual driving styles. Drive more aggressively and it will delay the shift points for more spirited performance. This keeps the transmission from shifting above third gear. We found it provided much better acceleration performance when winding along california's coastal roads or up and down mountain passes. Traction control, which reduces front wheel spin for improved control in slippery conditions, is a $300 option for some models. summarythe toyota camry is a smart choice. We found the audio quality on the available jbl sound system a bit lacking, however. we found the optional navigation system easy to use, easier than system on expensive european cars, and it recalculates quickly. the instruments are located in a relatively small pod directly in front of the steering wheel, with a large half-moon tachometer and matching speedometer. The fuel and temperature gauges are located within the two larger instruments. Lights and windshield wiper/washer controls are on stalks on the steering column, leaving the left lower edge of the dash free of switches. the camry dashboard is relatively plain, with no large curved surfaces, and it is set relatively high. The dash blends nicely into the door panels, but the cover for the passenger-side air bag is noticeable as the seams show clearly. Many other manufacturers have made the passenger-side air bag invisible. a wide center console separates the two front bucket seats and contains useful storage areas. The parking brake on the base and le is located in the center console, whereas the se and xle get foot-operated parking brakes. rear-seat passengers will find the camry's accommodations qu.
