Refined for y2k. introductiondodge durango features big-rig looks to back up its off-road capability. The durango is bigger than the ford explorer and other so-called compact sport-utilities, but smaller than ford expedition or chevy tahoe. Yet it's more maneuverable than the expedition. the durango is a good choice for large families. Its theater-style seating arrangement gives rear passengers a view of the road ahead. The durango is also a good choice for people who tow boats or other light to medium-sized trailer loads. There's lots of power available from the big 5. 9-liter v8, while a new 4. 7-liter v8 and automatic transmission combination promise greater refinement. Dodge revised the front suspension and steering system on 4wd durango models for 2000 in an effort to improve ride quality and responsiveness. And, did we mention styling?. lineuptwo trim levels are available, while a host of packages consolidate popular options. A new value-priced sport model joins the durango line for 2000. Distinguished by special badging, it comes standard with a short list of popular options. Slt trim includes a long list of luxury amenities, starting with leather upholstery. now in its third model year, the durango line has been expanded to include three v8 engines: a 5. 9-liter v8, a 5. 2-liter v8 and, new for 2000, a 4. 7-liter v8. Last year's 3. 9-liter v6 has been dropped from the lineup. dodge created its new 4. 7-liter magnum v8 from a clean sheet of paper. It's far more sophisticated than the other two available engines with a pair of single overhead camshafts (sohc) in place of the more traditional overhead-valve (ohv) design and produces its power more efficiently for its size. Rated at 235 horsepower and 295 foot-pounds of torque, the 4. 7-liter engine meets california's low emissions vehicle standards. This 4. 7-liter engine is epa-rated at 15/19 mpg on 2wd models. a popular choice is the highly competent 5. 2-liter v8, rated at 230 horsepower and 300 foot-pounds of torque. That's a bit more robust than the expedition's optional 5. 4-liter v8 (230 horsepower, 325 pound-feet of torque) and compares favorably to the tahoe's 5. 7-liter v8 (255 horsepower, and 330 pound-feet of torque). The durango should make a better tow vehicle than an explorer. With the 5. 9-liter engine and 3. 92 differential, it's capable of pulling a trailer of up to 7,200 pounds. Both transfer cases use a manually operated shift-on-the-fly lever mounted on the floor. walkarounddodge durango doesn't look like other suvs. It makes a bold statement with its muscular styling. It looks sportier than ford, gm and many of the imported suvs. interioreight people can fit in the durango--six comfortably--with theater seating designed to give everyone a view out front. The back half of the roof is raised nearly 2 inches to increase rear-seat headroom and visibility. This raised portion is cleverly disguised with a roof rack. second-row seats are quite comfortable, offering plenty of headroom and adequate legroom. Stable cupholders and rear heating/air conditioning controls add to comfort. Third-row seats are surprisingly comfortable for two people, who achieve adequate legroom by tucking their feet under the second row of seats. Getting in and out of that third row is easy: flip a lever and the second-row seatback folds forward, then tumbles out of the way allowing a quick entry or exit. It's one of the best third-row seating designs on the market. when it's time to haul cargo, the tailgate lifts up and out of the way and the two rows of seats are easily folded down to provide a large, relatively flat floor. A trout bum could sleep back there. All durangos have a long, narrow storage compartment under the floor just inside the rear lift gate with enough space for the jack, flares and other roadside equipment. An additional storage compartment replaces the footwell when the optional third row is not ordered. overall, the interior design is executed well. Matching plastic trim provides an organic appearance. The seats appear rather plain, but they are comfortable. Carpeting is carried through to the backs of the rear headrests, which do not have to be removed when the seats are folded down - a convenient, timesaving feature. the driving position is comfortable with good visibility over an attractive rounded hoodline. Instruments are big and easy to read, though the speedometer appears busy with 2 1/2-mph hash marks. Power outside mirrors are easy to adjust with a big knob on the driver's door. Cupholders and storage trays are nicely designed, while a digital compass and other useful readouts are overhead. Large buttons on the leather wrapped steering wheel operate one of the better cruise control executions we've seen. driving impressionas sport-utilities go, the durango is fun to drive. We spent a week with the big 5. 9-liter magnum v8 in the washington area. It always feels willing to get down the road quickly with excellent throttle response and quick acceleration. a daylong drive though the texas hill country west of san antonio showed us dodge's 5. 2-liter v8 also has lots of power for undulating highways and steep, rocky trails. The durango handled well when driven briskly down narrow roads with tight corners and sweeping turns. Compared to other sport-utilities, the durango feels sporty. Steering is precise and the suspension provides excellent transient response, crisply turning from left to right and back again. We'd drive a durango anywhere. durango's competent off-road capability and on-road handling response don't come as a free lunch, however. We found ride quality on downtown washington's crumbling infrastructure a bit on the harsh side. It's a good setup for people who live in a dry climate, but want to be able to shift into ultimate off-road mode. It comes with everything above plus a planetary center differential. Shifting to full-time mode allows the front and rear axles to turn at different speeds, so the wheels don't fight each other in tight quarters yet traction is assured under all but the worst conditions. It also compares favorably to the full-size ford expedition, chevrolet tahoe and gmc yukon. durango is practical, intelligently designed and easy to operate. It cuts a distinctive appearance among sport-utility vehicles. Its starting price is below last year's neon, and fuel economy is respectable, achieving 28/32 city/highway miles per gallon in its most frugal form, according to federal government estimates. At the other end of the scale, an srt4 version is expected in spring 2007 with a turbocharged engine generating 300 horsepower. the front seats are comfortable, with lots of headroom, and there's a large amount of cargo space here. Packaging is functional, with folding rear seats that have an optional reclining adjustment and an optional fold-flat front passenger seat to make room for a ladder or more likely, a surfboard. A couple of innovative options, especially for a car in this price class, are an air conditioned compartment in the glove box to chill water bottles or sodas and a swing-down stereo speaker panel attached to the liftgate that converts the back end to a sound stage for beach parties or tailgating. the caliber is no sports car, but we most enjoyed the mid-level sxt model with the 2. 0-liter engine and five-speed manual transmission. dodge is gambling a huge chunk of change on the hope new car shoppers looking for value and function can be persuaded hatchbacks are acceptable again, that five-door, small wagons have a place in american garages. Standard features include the sxt features, the sport appearance interior group, cruise control, leather-clad steering wheel with audio controls, cargo cover, a sport suspension with performance steering and p215/55r18 all-season performance tires on aluminum wheels. Massive headlights are notched into the leading corners of the front fenders. A pouting lower lip-like bumper separates the grille and headlights from a slimmer, lower air intake and (uplevel) fog lamps. the side view shows strongly blistered fenders front and rear beneath a wedge-shaped beltline. The lower portions of the doors wear longitudinal moldings, again, body color or chrome highlighted, that look like a bi-level rocker panel but aren't, but that nevertheless minimize the caliber's height. Full-round door handles, either chrome-trimmed or body color, bridge scooped-out grip spaces. the roofline arcs cleanly from its junction with the hood just aft of the front wheel well over the side door windows to pinch off at the tail end of the rear quarter glass. Topping this arc but stopping at the top of the backlight (rear windscreen) is an unbroken, thick strip of black molding the caliber's designers say is supposed to work with the arc and the truncated back end to impart a coupe look. We're not sure why that was important or that it necessarily succeeds, but it does buff up the caliber's side aspect. the back end pulls from the magnum, too, with a steeply raked backlight beneath a roof-mounted spoiler and above a mostly upright lower liftgate, employing a hatchback style arguing against any comparisons with a traditional station wagon. A relatively short rear overhang and oversize taillight housings add credence to the argument. interiorstep inside the caliber and the dodge legacy is loud and clear. Gauges are large, round and gleefully legible. The center stack presents the stereo face and climate control panel in stark relief with functional knobs, buttons and switches and trimmed in matte metallic plastic or not-very-convincing wood grain. the shift lever extends from the base of the stack; the notched gate on the cvt makes ratio selections intuitive, the manual gearbox less so, but not bad for a front-wheel-drive. The power point serves neither the cell phone holder nor a radar detector well; located at the extreme base of the center stack, it leaves cords either draped over the center console's cup holders or dangling down the dash between the instrument cluster and the center stack. the mp3 player/cell phone holder flips up out of the front of the center console armrest and, while properly sized for an ipod or similarly shaped mp3 device, adapts best to candy bar-style cell phones. This eases climbing in and out. the front seats are comfortable, but far from plush, with decently bolstered back cushions. Bottom cushions, or squabs in designer lingo, are more flat than sculpted and a bit short on thigh support. Front-seat headroom is impressive, topping the five-door mazda3 hatchback by almost two inches, the five-door ford focus zx5 hatchback by almost an inch. It falls short of the pontiac vibe and toyota matri.

2013 dodge dart review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. A fixture at the entry end of the dodge lineup from 1960 through 1976, the dart was discontinued in 1977 and its badge went into mothballs, forgotten, but obviously not gone. Now it's been resuscitated, and affixed to this all-new line of compact sedans. so the name is the same, and the new 2013 dodge dart occupies the same position in the dodge passenger car hierarchy as the original. But the similarities end right there. The first car to incorporate engineering elements from corporate parent fiat, the revival dart is a contemporary front-drive compact facing a considerably stronger competitive environment than its 20th century namesake. Does it have the chops to be a compelling alternative to the chevy cruze, ford focus, honda civic, hyundai elantra, kia forte, nissan sentra, mazda 3, subaru impreza, toyota corolla, and vw jetta? the answer is a definite maybe. Although fundamental elements of its unitbody foundations were adapted from the alfa romeo giulietta, the snappy italian hatchback, they've been stretched to accommodate the sedan body style: longer wheelbase, longer overall, wider track, wider body. Epa fuel economy estimates range up to 41 mpg on the highway (for the yet-to-be-seen aero model). Suggested retail pricing for the five trim levels opens at $15,995 and climbs to $19,995 for the limited model. The sporty r/t version carries a $22,495 base price. demerits: just one. For all the emphasis on the weight-saving benefits of high-strength steel, the darts are a little pudgy by compact standards. Listed curb weights start at 3186 pounds for a dart 2. 0-liter with manual gearbox and go as high as 3348 pounds for a model equipped with the 2. 4-liter engine and automatic transmission. it might also be noted that the wide array of models and trim packages could pose an assembly quality challenge for the belvidere factory. A hint of forward-leaning rake, plus modest front and rear overhangs, suggests sportiness. The styling doesn't provoke many double-takes, however. the design team took great pains with aerodynamics. The shape evolved through extensive wind tunnel time, and thoughtful details include active grille shutters that close to restrict radiator airflow when cooling air isn't needed, to reduce aerodynamic drag. The underbody is fully enclosed, and a rear diffuser manages underbody airflow to enhance stability. the net of all the aero attention is a praiseworthy drag coefficient of 0. 285, enhancing fuel economy and also helping to minimize wind noise. dodge signature elements for its latest offering are a new interpretation of the division's crosshair grille, and a taillamp treatment, adapted from the dodge challenger, that spreads across the entire rear end, incorporating 152 leds. one other exterior note, that relates to the interior. At 183. 9 inches long, 72. 0 inches wide, and 57. 7 inches tall the new dart is one of the biggest of the current compact crop, and the designers have put those dimensions to work inside, creating one of the roomiest interiors (over 97 cubic feet) in this class. The 13. 1-cubic foot trunk can be expanded by folding the rear seatbacks forward. In the base model the seatback is one piece. In other trim levels it's a split-folding setup. interiorroominess is always a plus in a family sedan, but it's much more compelling when it's nicely appointed. Here, too, the dart scores well. Nothing inside these new cars looks cheap, even in the most basic model, and soft-touch surfaces abound, dashboard, door panels, center console and elsewhere. the basic cloth upholstery is attractive and looks durable, denim inserts are offered in the sxt trim level, and leather is an option in the top-of-the line limited model. The seats are long-haul comfortable, with enough lateral support to feel sporty. Like all sedans, the cabin is rated for five, and like all of them the center rear position will accommodate an adult occupant about as far as the end of the driveway before complaints begin to fill the air. Foremost on this list is an 8. 4-inch touch-screen display, dominating the center dash of the higher trim levels (not available on the base dart). A nav system is offered for the limited model, as well as a configurable electronic instrument package and an led-powered light pipe surround for the entire instrument panel, which some may like, while others may find a bit garish. like other carmakers, chrysler has taken notice of the success of ford's sync infotainment system and responded with one of its own, called u-connect. This appellation is a little difficult to fathom with the basic 2. 0-liter version, which doesn't feel very tigerish, particularly mated with the optional 6-speed automatic transmission. Its 160-horsepower rating is the same as that of the 2. 0-liter, but it generates more torque, 184 pound-feet versus 148. The trick with this engine is keeping it in the sweet spot of. The second-row and third-row seats flip down into the floor, leaving a huge, perfectly flat cargo compartment behind the front seats. No other minivan currently has second-row seats that disappear into the floor. with seating for seven, the grand caravan can carry half the little league team with room left over for their stuff. Selectively folding away the seats gives its owner great versatility in hauling a mix of passengers and cargo. No need to pull seats out and store them in the garage or to try to put stuff on top of them. And its cargo space is more accessible and more convenient than that of suvs. other new and revised features further improve the grand caravan for 2005, making it a compelling choice among a strong group of competitors that have been recently been redesigned. Also more compelling: pricing, which has been dropped by an average of $3,000. the shorter caravan models are largely unchanged and have the old seating system. Dodge added new features to the caravan for 2004, including a tire pressure monitor. Its stereo systems feature in-dash, six-disc cd changers. on the road, the dodge grand caravan and caravan offer a smooth ride and responsive handling. Most models come with a powerful v6 engine that delivers strong acceleration for merging onto hectic freeways. It comes standard with air conditioning, variable intermittent wipers, am/fm/cd stereo, and 215/70 tires on 15-inch steel wheels. caravan sxt 22,295) is the short van equipped with a 3. 3-liter v6 and a higher level of standard equipment, though it does not get stow 'n go. Sxt adds second-row bucket seats, dual-zone manual air conditioning, tilt steering, cruise control, power windows, power heated mirrors, power locks with remote keyless entry, an upgraded am/fm/cassette/cd stereo, a rear window defroster, sunscreen glass, 215/65 tires on 16-inch aluminum wheels, a tire-pressure monitor, and other niceties, plus an expanded list of options. grand caravan se 21,995) is a long-wheelbase base model, similarly equipped to the caravan se. But it's powered by the 3. 3-liter v6 engine. Along with stow 'n go, the grand caravan sxt features second-row adjustable seats, a 60/40 split third-row bench with tailgate feature, front and rear cargo nets, dual power sliding doors, fog lamps, rear heat/air-conditioning system, roof rack, eight-way power driver's seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel, steering-wheel audio controls, overhead console with trip computer and compass/temperature gauge, and a new carbon weave center stack bezel. side-impact curtain airbags are optional. All-wheel drive has been dropped from the menu for 2005. Packages are available in a dizzying array of combinations. walkarounddodge caravan and grand caravan are large vehicles, but not outrageously so. Measuring just over 200 inches long and less than 5-feet, 10-inches tall, even the grand caravan will fit just about anywhere a full-size sedan will fit. Bumper to bumper, the standard caravan measures 189. 3 inches long. Grand caravan's extra 11 inches makes a big difference in the amount of cargo it can carry with all three rows of seats in place. Caravan rides on a wheelbase of 113. 0 inches, while the grand caravan stretches across a wheelbase of 119. 3 inches. grand caravan and caravan are sleek and attractive with steeply raked windshields and aggressive grilles. The tracks for the sliding side doors are cleverly camouflaged under the rear side windows for a clean appearance. The d-pillars and rear window are steeply inclined for a sporty look, and a discrete spoiler rises from the trailing edge of the roof. Flared wheel openings add strength to the appearance. Headlamps and taillamps are big, the latter wrapping around to the sides. The optional roof rack is hunkered close to the roof, stylistically less obtrusive and perhaps less likely to generate wind noise, but also offering less clearance for the thicker hooks of some tie-downs. the 2005 grand caravan models are distinguished by a new u-shaped grille with black grille bars, is a design cue shared with the new dodge magnum. The front fascia is new with a molded-in license plate pocket and new fog lamps, while the sides get new body-colored side moldings. models with power sliding doors on both sides add convenience when moving passengers. Press the button on the remote transmitter twice and the door slides open; press it twice again and it slides closed and seals. From the second-row seat, the power sliding door can be opened and closed by pressing a button; it can also be opened manually. A safety lock switch hidden on the trailing edge of the door can be engaged to prevent a child from opening the sliding door from inside. The power sliding doors can be fussy when passengers are in a hurry to get out, however, and they usually are. Pulling on the outside lever opens the power door manually, with just slightly more effort than opening a regular manual door. models with manually operated sliding doors are easy to operate, smoothly sliding open and closed with the pull of a nicely designed lever. The outside door handles are comfortable and well designed; they impart a feeling of quality in appearance and operation. All door handles should be this good, but they aren't. a power rear liftgate is available that adds convenience when picking up groceries or supplies. Press a button on the remote control and the liftgate opens or closes automatically. The material is soft and appears to be durable. Faux carbon fiber trim added a touch of high-tech to the cabin. the seats in the grand caravan seemed more bucket-like than those of the town & country and not as comfortable. There is a manually adjustable lumbar support, however, and the seatbacks seem to have more side bolstering than the t&c. Exposed screws on the power seat adjusters did not feel aesthetically pleasing. The seating position is higher than that of a sedan, which enables drivers to see over traffic. The second and third rows of seats fold flat into the floor leaving a perfectly flat platform for cargo. Folding and unfolding the seats is a quick three-step process. Pull one strap to drop the seatback, then pull two other straps to tuck it into the floor. This leaves a perfectly flat platform. Very few seats fold perfectly flat and no one else (except the chrysler town & country) has a second row that does this. The system is also flexible. The third row is split 60/40 and either or both of the second-row captain's chairs can be stowed. Grand caravan sxt and se plus models come standard with stow 'n go. the second-row seats move fore and aft to optimize legroom for rear passengers. The low load height also makes loading cargo easier, and the grand caravan can carry more stuff and bigger items than any suv. There's a fair amount of cargo space behind the third row. 2008 dodge caliber review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New srt4 model joins lineup. introductionthe dodge caliber was launched as a 2007 model. For 2008, the high-performance dodge caliber srt4 joins the lineup. the dodge caliber is classed as a compact car, though it's larger than the neon it replaced. A five-passenger, five-door, the caliber isn't easily categorized, combining elements from hatchback, wagon and minivan designs. Though very popular in europe, hatchbacks, especially five-door hatchbacks, have not caught on in american garages. The five-door hatch is a practical design, but most americans prefer the styling of a traditional sedan with a separate trunk. Maybe that's changing, however. All-wheel drive makes the caliber a capable winter vehicle. relatively affordable, caliber starts below $14,000 retail, and fuel economy is respectable, achieving 24/29 city/highway miles per gallon in its most frugal form, according to epa estimates. at the other end of the scale, the new srt4 version has a turbocharged engine generating 285 horsepower. With a starting price of $22,435, it is a performance bargain. the mid-level caliber sxt model with the 2. 0-liter engine and five-speed manual transmission is among the more enjoyable of the standard models, but the caliber is no sports car. For driving excitement, the srt4 is the choice. the front seats are comfortable, with lots of head room, and there's a large amount of cargo space here. Packaging is functional, with folding rear seats that have an optional reclining adjustment and an optional fold-flat front passenger seat to make room for a ladder or more likely, a surfboard. A 148-horsepower 1. 8-liter is standard in se and sxt, a 158-hp 2. 0-liter is optional for sxt, a 172-hp 2. 4-liter is standard in r/t, and the srt4 has a 285-hp turbocharged 2. 4-liter. The 1. 8 is mated to a five-speed manual gearbox, while the 2. 0 comes with a continuously variable automatic transmission (cvt). The 2. 4 is available with the five-speed manual in the front-drive r/t and the cvt in the all-wheel drive r/t. The srt4 comes only with a six-speed manual. the se 13,925) comes standard with the 1. 8-liter engine and five-speed manual transmission. Air conditioning is not standard, nor are power windows. The se comes with manual roll-up windows and manual outside mirrors. Options for the se are as extensive as the standard equipment is basic. The popular equipment group includes the power group, plus floor mats, a cargo area tonneau cover and cruise control. An uplevel stereo adds mp3 capability and six-disc cd changer. Sxt options include seat heaters for the cloth seats 250); sunroof 795); the driver convenience group 760) with dodge's uconnect hands-free cell phone link, homelink universal garage door opener, auto-dimming rearview mirror, vehicle information center and a tire pressure monitor; the popular equipment group 200) with fog lights, body side molding, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with redundant audio controls; a navigation system with six-disc cd changer 1395); and the premium sound group 495) boston acoustics sound system with nine speakers, including two articulating liftgate speakers called musicgate power. The available sport appearance group 365) has a body-color grille, color-keyed instrument panel and shifter bezel, fog lamps, sirius satellite radio, leather-wrapped steering wheel with redundant audio controls, and cloth bucket seats with contrasting inserts. When ordered with the 2. 0-liter engine, it also has dodge's autostick manual shiftgate with six preset gear ratios for the cvt automatic. A trailer tow group 130) adds an engine oil cooler and a wiring harness. the r/t 18,395) comes standard with the 2. 4-liter engine, the manual transmission and, new for '08, front-wheel drive. Massive headlights are notched into the leading corners of the front fenders. A pouting lower lip-like bumper separates the grille and headlights from a slimmer, lower air intake and (uplevel) fog lamps. the side view shows strongly blistered fenders front and rear beneath a wedge-shaped beltline. The lower portions of the doors wear longitudinal moldings, again, body color or chrome highlighted, that look like a bi-level rocker panel but aren't, but that nevertheless minimize the caliber's height. Full-round door handles, either chrome-trimmed or body color, bridge scooped-out grip spaces. the roofline arcs cleanly from its junction with the hood just aft of the front wheel wells over the side door windows to pinch off at the tail end of the rear quarter glass. Topping this arc but stopping at the top of the backlight (rear windscreen) is an unbroken, thick strip of black molding the caliber's designers say is supposed to work with the arc and the truncated back end to impart a coupe look. We're not sure why that was important or that it necessarily succeeds, but it does buff up the caliber's side aspect. the back end pulls from the magnum, too, with a steeply raked backlight beneath a roof-mounted spoiler and above a mostly upright lower liftgate, employing a hatchback style arguing against any comparisons with a traditional station wagon. A relatively short rear overhang and oversize taillight housings add credence to the argument. the srt4 can be distinguished by several exterior features aimed at both form and function. The ride height is lowered 28 mm in front and 22 mm in the rear. The front end features a functional hood scoop, dual hood vents, a unique front fascia with brake cooling ducts next to the fog lights, and a lower air dam. For 2008, the srt4 is available in only brilliant black, sunburst orange, bright silver and inferno red. interiorstep inside the caliber and the dodge legacy is loud and clear. Gauges are large, round and gleefully legible with black markings on white backgrounds. In the srt4, the central gauge is the tachometer instead of the speedometer, a change dodge says it made because the srt4 is a driver's car. To the left of the steering wheel in the srt4 is a turbo boost gauge; this area serves as a small cubby in other models. the srt4 also has a reconfigurable display with what dodge calls performance pages. This feature can provide readouts of lateral and longitudinal g forces, 1/8- and 1/4-mile time and speed, 0-60 mph time, and braking distance. All of these controls are easy to reach, but the materials are cheaply rendered and lacking in qual.
