After a redesign for 2010, the 2011 mustang gets two new engines, as well as new transmissions and improvements to ride, handling, and noise. So the 2011 mustang represents a significant improvement over the superb 2010 edition of america's pony car, which was a large improvement over the 2004-2009 models, which was a major improvement over what came before that.  the mustang has been in continuous production for 46 straight years, and more than 9 million mustangs have been built and sold to date. That gives the mustang the longest production run of any single model in ford history.  the 2011 ford mustang comes in three body styles: coupe, convertible, and a glass-roof coupe. Each is available in both the traditional v6 model and the v8-powered mustang gt. Both engines are much more powerful this year.  the 3. 7-liter v6 replaces the old 4. 0-liter v6, the new one producing 305 horsepower versus just 210 horses from the older, bigger engine. The new v8 marks the return of the 5. 0. An new all-aluminum engine, the 5. 0-liter v8 in the mustang gt produces 412 horsepower, which is far more than the 315 horsepower of the outgoing 4. 6-liter v8. Both new engines for 2011 get new six-speed manual and automatic transmissions versus the five-speeds of 2010.  the ford shelby gt500 gains power for 2011, with a new aluminum version of the 5. 4-liter v8 producing 550 horsepower instead of the 500 ponies from the 2010 iron-block engine. We have not driven the new shelby gt500. Yet.  the 2011 engines transform the mustang, providing the type of willing power pony car fans will love while improving fuel economy at the same time. The engines are lighter and the car has more rigidity, so the already impressive handling is that much better.  the 2011 mustang is also quieter and more refined than ever, and, more importantly, it's an absolute blast to drive. It is quick off the mark with a brawny sound, crisp handling, a tight suspension, and much improved brakes. Put simply, this is the best mustang ever, and it is the model that other pony car makers should follow.  in addition to the new engines and transmissions, the 2011 mustang gets an additional front z brace and a revised suspension to improve ride quality while also improving handling; new safety features including ford's mykey system, power side mirrors with integral blind spot mirrors, and fold-down rear headrests; electric power steering meant to improve fuel economy while also aiding steering feel; and new features, such as a performance package for v6 models and available brembo brakes for the gt. lineupthe 2011 mustang is offered in v6 base and premium models, v8-powered gt base and premium models, and the supercharged v8-powered gt500, each in coupe and convertible body styles. There's a sport appearance package 295) that just has the rear spoiler and body stripes.  the mustang club of america special edition 995) for the v6 premium adds p235/50zr18 tires on sterling gray metallic-painted alloy wheels, dark stainless painted billet grille with tri-bar pony badge, side tape stripes, decklid tape, rear spoiler, carpeted floormats with pony logo, and automatic headlights.  the california special 1,995) edition for the gt premium adds 19-inch painted alloy wheels, a chrome billet grille with tri-bar pony badge, unique lower front fascia with foglamps, pedestal spoiler, decklid badge with faux gas cap, instrument panel applique, carbon door panel inserts, carbon inserts for leather seating surfaces, carpeted floormats with logo, rear diffuser-style fascia, decklid tape and side scoops.  a navigation system with voice recognition and real-time traffic information, and dual-zone automatic climate control come with the electronics group 2,340). The comfort group 595) adds heated front seats and a six-way power-adjustable front passenger seat. With its 2010 redesign, ford gave a nod to the 1969-70 mustang with a new face that features a wider grille opening.  other elements of the redesign could be seen as tributes to the past. The coupe's fastback roofline, unchanged from the last generation, recalls the original 1964. 5 mustang. The chamfered three-element taillamps, which house sequential turn signals that blink from the inside lamp to the outside lamp, were first found on the 1964 thunderbird, then the 1967-68 shelby mustangs and late '60s mercury cougars. And the hockey stick lower character line could be viewed as an homage to the lower portion of the side coves found on mustangs from 1964 to '68.  compared to the last generation body style, ford said the 2010 mustang had 23 percent less aerodynamic lift at the front with a new slotted panel installed under the radiator to direct air, 50 percent better in front/rear lift balance, and seven percent less aerodynamic drag. For 2011, the company has lowered the front air dam and added a front splitter and an underbody aero shield to improve aerodynamics by another 4 percent.  ford took several steps to improve noise, vibration and harshness for the 2010 model year, and the company has done even more for 2011. Additional sound-deadening material on the instrument panel and a rear wheel arch liner help drivers hear the sounds they want (namely the engine) and avoid the sounds that can be a distraction (such as dash creaks and tire noise).  the 3453-pound mustang (3605 pounds for the gt) uses welded steel unibody construction with front and rear subframes to mount the steering and suspension systems, with almost half the body weight in high-strength low-alloy steel. It is by far the lightest of the new breed of pony cars, beating the camaro by 300 pounds and the dodge challenger by as much as 500 pounds. The weight savings are a definite advantage.  the convertible comes standard with a power top with a glass rear window. The top uses two latches that the driver must operate, but they're within arm's reach and they latch and unlatch easily. interioranyone who hasn't been in a mustang for a couple of years will want to take a look at the 2011 model. The interior was much improved for 2010 and there are even more improvements for 2011. The front bucket seats are significantly more comfortable and better looking than the slabs used in the 2009 models, though they could still use more lateral support. The aforementioned noise.

The new mach 1 and the cobra deliver brilliant acceleration performance with lots of torque for quickly attaining super-legal speeds. Don't expect sophisticated ride and handling, though. This is a hammer of a car, and it's interior is dated.  mustang's heritage dates back to april 17, 1964, when the first one rolled onto the streets with its long hood, short rear deck, low profile. About 135,000 mustangs were sold in 2002. Ford claims mustang is the best-selling convertible in america (54,783 in 2001). With the chevy camaro and pontiac firebird gone, the ford mustang is the last pony standing. A new mustang is on the horizon, likely to be introduced as a 2005 model.  for 2003, two new special-edition models are available: mach 1 models boast a powerful twin-cam v8, sports suspension, and shaker hood designed to remind us of the famous 1969 fastback. Several new measures are designed to reduce wind noise, the suspension has been retuned, and the v6 and v8 engines get some minor refinements.  . lineupmustang comes in coupe and convertible body styles. Base models come with a v6 engine. High-performance gt models are powered by a v8. Distinguished by its black shaker hood, the mach 1 4885) is a package that includes special 17-inch wheels, special leather-trimmed seats, special interior trim, in-dash six-disc cd stereo, and special exterior graphics.  gt and convertible models offer a premium package 2585) with leather seating surfaces, the mach 460 stereo with in-dash 6-cd changer, and abs and traction control. Convertible models with premium trim come standard with an automatic transmission.  cobra models are massaged by ford's special vehicle team, or svt. The svt v8 produces 390 horsepower at 6000 rpm, with 390 pounds-feet of torque at 3500 rpm. It comes mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. Cobra comes shod with p275/40r17 tires and loaded with special interior and exterior trim.  convertibles feature a power top with a scratch-resistant glass rear window. A black semi-hard boot protects the top and provides a slick top-down appearance.  new safety features for 2003 include a new a-pillar, headliners, sun visors and a revised d-ring seat belt attachment, all designed to offer better head protection in the event of an impact. The firing strategy on both driver and passenger side air bags has been updated. Standard safety equipment includes safety belts with pretensioners to tighten the lap belt and shoulder belts in the first moments of a crash. The rear fender air intake, for example, has sharp corners and pronounced lines; but the rocker panels curve out, and the fenders have pronounced front and rear wheel well arches. The front end features wraparound complex reflector headlamps with integrated side marker lamps, combined with a square-edged honeycomb grille and a chrome pony. Tricolor front fender badges recall the good old days, as does the prominent but non-functional hood scoop. In back, it's 1965 with vertical, three-element taillamps.  gt models get unique hood and side-scoop treatments, along with fog lights and a rear spoiler.  mach 1 is easy to spot with special trim that starts with its shaker hood scoop. Attached directly to the top of the engine, the black scoop rears its head through a squarish hole in the mach 1 hood. (hood scoops on gt models sit on top of the hood.) a bold low-gloss black stripe runs up the center of the powerdome hood to accentuate the scoop. In theory, the scoop is designed to channel fresh air into the intake for increased breathing and, therefore, increased power.  cobra is distinguished from the other models by a unique front and rear appearance package. Its raised hood is required to make room for the supercharger setup. Two rear-facing vents near the leading edge of the hood are designed to let hot air out of the engine bay. Cobra is further distinguished by its unique grille opening, front bumper, driving lamps, rocker panels and side scoops, rear-end treatment, and 17-inch five-spoke alloy wheels in either brushed or chromed finish.  . interiorthe mustang has good, reclining bucket seats with plenty of travel. Seatbelts are attached to the seat frames so they move with the seats.  the interior is cozy, with enough seat-track length to accommodate tall drivers and just enough elbowroom to keep from feeling cramped. Convertibles and coupes offer about the same space in the front seats.  the back seat is small, with only enough room for small objects or kids. Convertibles offer less hip and shoulder room than coupes, but about the same headroom and legroom.  the trunk is small with an even smaller opening. Coupes hold just under 11 cubic feet worth of cargo, while convertibles hold just 7. 7 cubic feet. A split fold-down rear seat is standard on all models and handy for hauling cargo. A glow-in-the-dark safety latch has been added inside the trunks of all mustang models designed to prevent kids getting locked in the trunks.  the federal government gives the mustang a five-star rating for front passenger safety, its highest. Only the two frontal air bags are available, however, there are no side air bags.  leather upholstery is standard in the premium gt, optional in some other models. Running horses embossed on the upper portions of the seat backrests recall the deluxe pony interior of the mid-1960s.  the mach 1 tachometer and speedometer use a tall condensed typeface and more hash marks that make it harder to read than the gauges in the gt models. The instrument panel, center console and headliner are color-keyed. To turn on the headlights, pull out an old-fashioned knob on the left. The center console includes cup holders.  svt cobra models offer front bucket seats with nudo leather trim and suede inserts. The driver's seat features six-way power with power-adjustable thigh and side bolsters, and power lumbar support. Clearly, these seats are made for serious, fast driving. Switches are on the right-front corner of the seat. The svt instrument cluster has been redesigned to include a boost gauge. The gauges feature titanium-colored faces and electroluminescent lighting. The cobra's gearshift knob is leather-wrapped, with a brushed-aluminum insert on the top, inscribed with the six-speed pattern. Metal-trimmed pedals and dead pedal are standard.  . driving impressiona 300-mile drive in a gt convertible was a reminder that the mustang is a throwback to another era, but still a very enjoyable car. Forty years after it created an automotive niche all its own, mustang is both true to its roots and better than ever.  the 2006 mustang is available as both a coupe and a convertible, powered by either a v6 or a v8 engine. The v6 deluxe comes well equipped for less than $20,000. The mustang gt boasts a multi-valve, overhead-cam v8 that produces 300 horsepower. Both are available with a manual or automatic transmission. More importantly, both deliver the bold styling, rear-drive performance and affordability that have been mustang hallmarks for decades.    retro inspired, to be sure, the mustang is nonetheless a thoroughly modern car. Launched for 2005 with a clean-sheet design, the mustang is faster and more agile than ever. It's also quieter and better built (even the convertible), and it rides more smoothly. Its interior is a throwback to the original mustang, but it's also functional and well finished. For 2006, a new pony package gives v6 mustangs all the show, if not the go, of the v8. The v8s are available with trendy new 18-inch wheels for 2006.  a family car, the mustang isn't. Interior space is limited for a car of its exterior dimensions, and the back seat might better be described as a package shelf. Yet the 2006 mustang holds true to an idea that still appeals to people of all ages decades after it was launched.  the ford mustang has been an icon of american performance since its introduction in 1964. It created the pony car genre, and after 40-plus years of competition with the barracuda, camaro, firebird and others, it's the only one left. We, and a few hundred thousands others, are glad it's still here. lineupthe 2006 ford mustang lineup probably seems more complicated than it really is. Mustang is available as either a fastback coupe or convertible, each with either a v6 or v8 engine. The v6 models focus on value, while the v8 gts focus on performance. The gts are available with 18-inch wheels 195).  safety features on all mustangs include dual-stage front impact airbags and three-point belts for all seats. Antilock brakes and traction control are standard on the gts and optional on the v6 models 775). Front passenger side-impact airbags 370) are optional on all models, so be sure to order them as they are designed to offer torso protection in a side impact. walkaroundthe 2006 ford mustang follows the trend by offering ever larger wheels. The gt is now available with two distinct 18-inch wheel designs, as well as two new exterior colors: vista blue clearcoat metallic and tungsten grey clearcoat metallic. So trimmed, the mustang looks more aggressively handsome than ever, and nearly identical to the concept cars that grabbed everyone's attention at the 2004 north american international auto show.  nothing says modern american sporty car better than this mustang. Its long hood and short rear deck capitalize on 40 years of mustang history. The current mustang features classic design cues that have defined mustangs since the 1960s: c-scoops in the sides, three-element tail lamps and a galloping horse badge in the center of the grille. Its menacing shark-like nose is reminiscent of the 1967 model. Everything under the car has been upgraded substantially from previous mustang levels: bigger brakes by nearly 20 percent, completely new front and rear suspension designs that yield much quieter, smoother ride as well as much more precise steering during hard cornering, improved engines and new transmissions. Optional antilock brakes bundled with traction control give any driver much more of a fighting chance in bad situations by allowing the driver to brake and steer at the same time.  the engines are mounted to the body with hydraulic engine mounts, which absorb and counteract vibration and pulsing. By adapting ideas and components from luxury cars, ford has given the current mustang a level of sophistication its predecessors never had. Yet the mustang heritage of low-cost performance and flashy styling has not been compromised one iota. We know, because we've driven every generation since the original debuted in the spring of 1964.  perhaps most retro of all mustang features is a new-for-2006 pony package for v6 models. This includes a grille with gt-style round fog lamps and a chrome bezel, or corral, around the traditional mustang prancing horse. The package includes 17-inch wheels, front-fender pony badges, a lower door stripe, and a rear spoiler. interiorthe styling themes that so readily identify the 2006 mustang are apparent inside, too. The interior is as blatantly throwback as the exterior, and nearly as well done. It's sporty and crisp in appearance and straightforward in function.  there's a very heavy dose of 1967 mustang inside, with two distinct right and left pods, blended with modern touches. Chrome-ringed air vents align across the dash, precisely in line with the gauges, and the steering wheel has three spokes with a center hub marked by the horse and tricolor bars logo. While some of the materials have a cost-saving look and feel, the package is not bad given the high style and price of entry. An interior upgrade package, with satin or dark-finish aluminum inserts, goes a long way toward eliminating traces of cheapness. Speaking of brightening, however, there's enough shiny metal on this car's dash and steering wheel to create some glare problems for drivers on sunny days. Just like the old days.  these are the good old days in terms of roominess in the mustang. Thanks to a longer wheelbase and larger overall size, there is a lot more hip, leg, elbow and shoulder room inside this mustang that in any previous generation. We found the front bucket seats to be comfortable, supportive and retentive in hard corners. The 2+2 back seat, however, isn't much more accommodating than before, and it's not a place adults will want to spend any time.  the trunk, however, is as large as those in some more overtly practical sedans, and the folding rear seat expands cargo space even further.  the basic sound system that comes with the car is pretty darn good. The 500-watt upgrade is reasonably priced in the premium package, and adds a six-cd changer. The 1000-watt upgrade will impress most audiophiles, but the extra subwoofers in the trunk steal a good chunk of cargo space. The only pony car left faces a bright future. introductionrecently voted america's favorite car of all time, the 37-year-old ford mustang just seems to roll along like a runaway freight train, headed for a certain future. Each year brings new surprises and delights to about 200,000 new owners. The latest delight is the 2003 svt cobra.  this will be the last year of production for the mustang's archrivals, the chevrolet camaro and the pontiac firebird. That means the mustang, which created the ponycar in the spring of 1964, will once again be alone in this segment in 2003.  with the new cobra closing in on 400 horsepower and the camaro and firebird bowing out, the mustang's future looks as bright as the sun. lineupmustang comes in two body styles, coupe and convertible.  model year 2002 is characterized by a raft of minor changes for the mustang and mustang gt models. Gt and convertible models are packaged as deluxe or premium 2585). Cobras come with the kitchen sink. In the base, gt and svt cobra models, there's quite a bit of new equipment for 2002.  audiophiles have the option of a new, speed-sensitive, mach 1000 audio system with a six-disc in-dash cd changer. The 2002 mustang also is available with an mp3 cd-player.  there's more. The popular v6 mustang adds standard 16-inch bright aluminum wheels with exposed lugs. Reclining cloth front bucket seats are standard, as are 50/50 split-folding rear seatbacks on coupe models. A six-way power driver's seat is available, as are leather-trimmed bucket seats.  convertibles feature a power top with a scratch-resistant glass rear window. A black semi-hard boot protects the top and provides a slick top-down appearance. walkaroundthe design of the mustang carries over without changes for 2002. The rear fender air intake, for example, has sharp corners and pronounced lines; but the rocker panels curve out, and the fenders have pronounced front and rear wheel well arches. The front end features wraparound complex reflector headlamps with integrated side marker lamps, combined with a square-edged honeycomb grille and a chrome pony. Tricolor front fender badges recall the good old days, as does the prominent but non-functional hood scoop. In back, it's 1965 with vertical, three-element taillamps.  gt models get unique hood and side-scoop treatments, along with fog lights and a rear spoiler.  the cobra, the newest mustang in the corral, relies on its horsepower and torque to make an impression on those within and without the car, but it is not without its physical charms. The cobra features a completely new front and rear appearance package that distinguishes it from the previous model. The biggest difference is in the raised hood required by the addition of the supercharger assembly under it. In addition to the tall bulge, there are two rear-facing vents near the leading edge to exhaust hot air from the engine bay. There's a new grille opening, new front bumper, new driving lamps, new 17-inch 5-spoke alloy wheels that can be had in either brushed or chromed finish, new rocker panels and side scoops, a new rear end treatment with a very discreet and conservative rear spoiler section, and a new cobra rear valance panel. This time out, there are seven hot exterior colors, none subtle, and two interior colors. interiorthe mustang has good, reclining bucket seats with plenty of travel. Seatbelts are attached to the seat frames so they move with them.  the coupe interior is cozy, with enough seat-track length to accommodate tall drivers and just enough elbowroom to keep from feeling cramped. The mustang's back seat is small, with only enough room for small objects or kids. The trunk is small with an even smaller opening. A split fold-down rear seat is standard on all models and handy for hauling cargo. A glow-in-the-dark safety latch has been added inside the trunks of all mustang models designed to prevent kids getting locked in the trunks.  the mustang is now rated by the government with its highest five-star rating for front passenger safety. There are only two front air bags available, however.  leather upholstery is standard in the premium gt, optional in some other models. Running horses embossed on the upper portions of the seat backrests recall the deluxe pony interior of the mid-sixties. The instrument panel, center console and headliner are color-keyed. The center console was revised last year with improved cup holders and functionality.  svt cobra models offer the poshest accommodations ever seen in a mustang: new front bucket seats with nudo leather trim and suede inserts. The driver's seat features six-way power with power-adjustable thigh and side bolsters, and power lumbar support. Clearly, these seats are made for serious, fast driving. Switches are on the right-front corner of the seat.  the svt instrument cluster has been redesigned to include a boost gauge. The gauges feature titanium-colored faces and electroluminescent lighting.  the cobra's gearshift knob is leather-wrapped, with a brushed-aluminum insert on the top, inscribed with the six-speed pattern. New metal-trimmed pedals and dead pedal are standard. Additional cobra standard features include a leather-wrapped steering wheel; leather boots for the shift and parking brake levers; tilt steering wheel; power windows, mirrors, door locks, and trunk release; the securilock passive anti-theft system; remote keyless entry; speed control. driving impressionthe cobra's 4. 6-liter, dohc modular v8 is equipped with an eaton supercharger providing 8 pounds of boost, plus an intercooler to keep things cool, and it is tuned very differently from the regular mustang gt engine. It produces 390 horsepower at 6000 rpm, with 390 pounds-feet of torque at 3500 rpm, while the gt engine is rated at 260 horsepower at 5250 rpm and 302 foot-pounds at 4000. That's a huge difference of 22 percent more power in an already quick and fast car (electronically limited to 155 mph but capable of close to 180 mph). The cobra's engine uses a cast-iron block for long-term durability, with new pistons and connecting rods to cope with the superchager boost, and uses an aluminum flywheel and driveshaft to offset some of the weight of the iron block.  the cobra carries a completely retuned suspension system that lets the car handle and corner at even higher limits, with more confidence, than ever before. It carries premium bilstein shocks absorbers front and rear, stiffer front springs to cope with the added front-end weight, and a stiffer front anti-roll bar. Rear brake material has been upgraded to match the massive front brakes' stopping power, and there's an additional chassis brace at the rear to handle the increased power. All mustang cobras will have the new tremec 6-speed manual transmission and clutch assembly that provides improved shift quality. A new 11-inch flywheel and clutch assembly have been added to increase torque capacity and reduce clutch pedal effort.  traction control, previously optional, is now standard on the premium v6 and on all v8 models including the cobra. The bosch traction control system works at all speeds: whenever wheelspin is detected, the system retards ignition timing, cuts fuel flow, and activates the brakes at one or both drive wheels, in that order. The new suspension and tires offer incredibly good grip when cornering hard, without side-stepping and chatter. The cobra's special braking system was re-engineered, with new aluminum twin-piston front calipers to reduce unsprung weight. The new calipers also contribute to greatly improved brake pedal feel, while the new master cylinder improves not only modulation but also the ratio of brake pedal travel to braking action. Anti-lock braking, like traction control, is standard on the cobra. It can be ordered with traction control on all other mustangs except base-level, manual-transmission coupes. But all the best traits of the mustang, the original pony car, remain. There's plenty of torque. There are japanese and korean coupes that compete with mustang on price, but they don't offer pony car performance. lineuplike the gm pony cars, the ford mustang comes in many guises. There are v6 and v8 versions in both coupe and convertible body styles. There's also the cobra, a super-performance model (available as a coupe or convertible) that competes against the camaro ss and the firebird ram air. Mustang gt models come with a 4. 6-liter overhead-cam v8 that produces 260 horsepower. Both engines offer substantially more power this year. The limited-production svt cobra and cobra convertible models come with special 32-valve double overhead-cam engines.  prices for the mustang coupes: base 16,520), gt 21,015), cobra 27,605). Its 4. 6-liter sohc modular v8 engine produces 260 horsepower at 5000 rpm with 302 foot-pounds of torque at 4000 rpm. The engine features revised camshafts, intake manifold runners, and larger valves for improved airflow above 3000 rpm. A new coil-on-plug ignition system replaces the previous ignition system for higher energy spark. The gt engine sounds great, whether cruising or at full throttle.  power from the mustang's 3. 8-liter split-port v6 engine is up substantially as well. It has been increased from 150 horsepower to 190 horsepower at 5250 rpm, with 225 foot-pounds of torque at 3000 rpm.  all models, regardless of engine or transmission, get a 3. 27:1 rear axle ratio. Both transmissions shift smoothly. The flexibility of both the v8 and v6 engines make good mates for the transmissions, which feature sufficient strength to take high-rpm shifts for the life of the car. The 4-speed automatic transmission has been recalibrated for smoother upshifts. The 5-speed tremec manual transmissions are carried over from 1999, with the v6 using the t-5 and the v8 using the t-45. The bosch system works at all speeds to reduce wheelspin. Whenever wheelspin is detected, the system retards ignition timing, cuts fuel flow, and activates the brakes at one or both drive wheels, in that order. This car involves the driver. Most of the raw edges and choppiness of the mustang's old suspension behavior have been smoothed out. Engineers retuned the rear suspension for improved compliance by increasing suspension travel. This reduces ride harshness. The gt has linear-rate springs, up in front to 450 pounds per inch. At the rear, the old springs were swapped out in favor of 210 pound per inch linear-rate springs. These decrease the mustang's ride stiffness and improve steering feel and response.  the steering is more direct and more positive than pre-1999 mustangs. A revised boost curve gives the steering more linear response and better on-center feel. The turning circle has been reduced by 3 feet through changes to the steering rack, the lower control arms and front stabilizer bars.  the braking system was re-engineered for 1999, with new aluminum twin-piston front calipers reduce front unsprung weight by a significant 10 pounds. The new calipers also contribute to greatly improved brake pedal feel. A new master cylinder design improves the ratio of brake pedal travel to brake force and improves pedal modulation. Abs is still optional for 2000 and must be ordered to get the traction control system. summarythe camaro and firebird are slightly more powerful than the mustang gt. The mustang gt is also less expensive than either of the gm pony cars by several thousand dollars. Both the camaro and firebird are slated for extinction in the near future, which will leave the mustang as the sole pony car.
